Trends in China's home appliance industry in the first half of 2022

In the first quarter of this year, the cumulative domestic sales of China home appliance industry was 154 billion yuan (categories involving color TVs, Air conditioners, refrigerators, washing machines, kitchen and bathroom appliances, and small home appliances), a year-on-year decrease of 12.3%. Data from the General Administration of Customs shows that China home appliance exports were 137 billion yuan in the first quarter of 2022, down 7.3% than last year. Affected by the epidemic in many places in China, the online and offline sales of China electric appliance were affected to varying degrees in the half year of 2022. In addition, online retail sales fell by 3.4% and offline retail sales fell by 20.4%.Overall,  The first half of 2022 in China were affected by the epidemic, the production and sales of home appliances was slightly sluggish. The market upgrade trend was continued, and the price of the terminal market to rise. Moreover,  Innovative products, integrated, intelligent and high-quality products are favored by manufacturers and consumers.

Especially in March, China's manufacturing industry was under pressure from various aspects. The cost of raw materials for the home appliance manufacturing industry was at a historically high level, and the shutdown of production in some areas has put pressure on the supply chain of technology and industrial industries. The intensification of the epidemic has also hindered logistics, and the recovery process of residents' consumption has slowed down. In particular, online consumption, which has been strong since the epidemic last year, was also dragged down in the first quarter of this year.

The retail sales of traditional home appliances, color TVs, air conditioners, refrigerators (including freezers), and washing machines (including dryers) account for about 60% of the overall domestic sales of China home appliance industry. The domestic retail sales of these six categories of home appliances in the first quarter of this year were 87.4 billion yuan, down 14% from 2021. Among them, only clothes dryers showed an increase of 65.8%, and other categories‘s magnitude of the decline by more than double digits.

Residents' willingness to consume has been suppressed. Kitchen and bathroom appliances should have ushered in the peak sales season, performed less than expected in the first quarter. The overall sales volume decrease by 9.7%. However, emerging categories such as integrated stoves and dishwashers are still on the rise, and the market size growth of 31.5% and 17.7% respectively than last season. In terms of traditional kitchen appliances, the market penetration rate of high-power gas stoves and large-suction range hoods continues to grow. Built-in kitchen appliances can meet the diverse needs of current consumers in different scenarios, so they are favored by consumers. For example, the online and offline retail sales of built-in dishwashers have reached 87.0% in the dishwasher market in the first quarter. As the representative of integrated kitchen appliances, the integrated stove has continued to rise in market popularity. Among them, the retail sales of integrated cooking stoves in the offline market accounted for 55.0%.

The small household appliance market continued the trend of weak demand since the fourth quarter of last year, and the scale of domestic sales fell by 10.3% compared with last year. Due to the continuous rise of manufacturing costs, the lag in the increase of export order prices of enterprises, and the gradual recovery of overseas production capacity, the export of small household appliances has not continued the strong performance since 2020.
